Japanese Dinner!

Last week in Geography we studied Japan! We learned lots of interesting facts but one that stuck out was that less than 1% of the country calls themselves Christians... prayer point! As we learn to think outside our comfortable community where we live we quickly realized the need for a harvest in that country. We are thankful that this country was brought to our attention.

As the kids and I researched our options for dinner the MUST HAVE by all was the green tea cake! So here we go.....
The ingredients are ready and 3 out of 4 cooks are ready (Carter was having a serious competition with himself and his legos)!
We must open the green tea bags and make green tea powder. Both Andrew and Aubrey LOVED it! We used a coffee grinder.
We mixed the batter and it was green. A little concerned what a green cake would taste like but we are ready to bake!
The cake is supposed to be a layered cake and I don't (for some odd reason) own 2 round pans SO the top layer is a heart shape. As you see below the icing is green as well because it, too, contains green tea powder.
The kids LOVED it! My parents happened to come over last minute and they, too, liked it (notice the word love was not used)! We would make it again--not a sweet cake but actually pretty good!
This is beautiful Aubrey in her new apron! My friend Robin Bollman made this for me to give to Aubrey for Christmas. Aubrey's gifts this year revolved around the kitchen, she is developing a love for cooking already!
For the main course! The ingredients are out and we are ready!
Aubrey is brushing the steak for our beef roll-ups.We rolled asparagus, green onion and mushrooms and set them with a tooth pick.
Time to saute the green beans and toast the sesame seeds to top them with.
Last but definitely least Aubrey mixed up the sauce for our sushi rice... it was a sweet and tasty rice! Form this point forward we didn't take any pictures. Papa and Grammy cleaned their plates... a Japanese dinner that we have never prepared before is not what we would necessarily serve guests but it turned out well and we would prepare it again.. two thumbs up!
